Wicked coffee and good vibes in Key West
Key West, Florida. Coconuts Cafe.
It was 10 AM and we needed coffee quick. Scooters flew by us playing Bob Marley as a slight breeze blew discarded strands of hair over my eyes. I didn’t mind it, or that it was taking us a bit longer than usual to find a coffee shop. For all it’s bells and whistles, Duval Street doesn’t have java.
My swetheart led me by the hand as we crossed Key West’s busiest street, a few bicycles rang their bells and we nearly tripped over a rooster. They’re all over the island, so it’s not exactly easy to avoid them. I put my hand over my eyes. Even with sunglasses, the island rays are unforgiving. And there we saw it, a coffee cup surrounded my neon lights and a bright poster that read ‘WICKED COFFEE’ and ‘I HEART GOOD VIBES’.
We made our way over, tip toeing to avoid a few more roosters. As Jaime ordered us a pair of iced coffees, I slipped into the quaint shop’s seating area. I love an islander’s version of cozy. It felt like I was in someone’s living room. Someone who lived on an island but had a flare for the eccentric. If this was a garage sale, I’d want mostly everything.
I wiggled through a few discarded chairs and began to run my fingers along one of the lamps. Such a vibrantly colored antique sitting right here on Duval Street. A few blocks down people are stapling dollar bills with obscenities on them, and yet here there is a flamboyant living room where one can quietly enjoy good vibes with their coffee. Key West is surprising like that.
I wish I had more time to sit and think, to let my mind remember what being a little girl in an adult’s room was like. It’s much the same feeling I have now touching the lamp and staring wide eyed at the island art. I want to sit with my laptop and write.
I thoughtfully walked back and grabbed my iced coffee to go. The woman behind the counter smiled sweetly and gave us directions to a nearby beach. I never want to leave here.
I clutched my coffee, blew a kiss at her and took my vibes to go. I'll come back here to write soon enough, but today is for exploring Key West.
