Your dining room is the epicenter of your home. It’s one of my favorite ways to connect with guests, and some of the most honest conversations I’ve had have come from sitting down and sharing a meal. The realizations I’ve come to while enjoying a glass of wine over my dinner table is unreal. This focal point of activity for your home means a lot of designers take license to charge upwards of $1,000 for just the table (and that’s being rather conservative as my bedside manner is superb).
I recently moved out and was pinterest-ing like a boss and showing off my dining room prowess only to be smacked down by reality: I have really expensive taste. Eventually, I turned to thrifting, which I love. Not only because the prices are much more budget friendly, but the sustainable-loving hippie within me loves keeping the energy of a piece flowing. Honoring something that had so many memories established before it by inviting more warm memories to be had makes me and my wallet happy campers.
My dining room set pictured here came together for less than $50. Fact. I will give you a minute to remove your jaws off of your floors and collect yourself. Yes, the whole thing was less than $50. The table and chairs, which are solid wood, cost less than a couple of drinks at South Beach. The key was to have patience and scour any and every thrift store, garage sale and keep eyes, ears, noses and other limbs looking out for giveaways. Emphasis on giveaways.
People, particularly offices, get rid of things all the time. . . and those things are your treasures. This fabulous table was going to a junkyard until my mom saved it, sanded that sucker down and moved it into our home. The chairs were purchased at several thrift stores for less than $10 each.
