Being a South Florida local has it’s perks, one of which is the boundless potential for vacation spots. Treating yourself to a vacation can be as elaborate or simple as you decide it should be. You can literally order an a la carte staycation by mixing up a dash of adventure with a hint of luxury, and a side of indulgence, a perfect bite sized portion of local bliss. After my delicious honeymoon in California, life became a long continuous stream of work, eat, sleep, repeat. At some point you have to acknowledge that you need a break from the pattern, so I did. I decided to cash in a very thoughtful wedding gift I had been holding in my back pocket for a moment when we (hubby and I) needed it most. . . So we served ourselves a little plate of luxury at The W Hotel, South Beach.
When planning a stay-cation you must commit to removing yourself from daily life, of course this can be challenging because you’re only miles away from your home base, but don’t lose sight of the goal. . . vacate your stress and all that comes with it! This wasn't difficult to accomplish given the amazing accommodations. The W Hotel has a well-known reputation for exclusivity, especially because there are people fortunate enough to call this spectacular establishment their primary residence. The friendly and enthusiastic staff invite you in as if they were welcoming you to your new home. While crossing the threshold I was greeted by intoxicating perfumes which lavishly delighted my senses. . . the space is appropriately named The Living Room. The grandiose vistas of chic modern design blended with rustic home furnishings sets the ambiance, so warm and inviting I could have spent hours appreciating it.
While waiting for our room to be in perfect order, we lounged by the beach under a hot pink umbrella with the rest of the sanctuary seekers. For the next hour I laid basking in full sun, with a margarita in one hand, my hubby by my side, eyes closed, body melting into stillness, the ocean whispering sweet nothings, happy as can be. What a beautiful start to my mini getaway. Our hotel room, a spectacular studio, held a kind of muted extravagance which was just over the top enough to make you feel like royalty, but simple enough to make you feel at home. The king-sized bed was a hybrid between a cloud and a hammock, and was perfectly positioned in front of a million dollar view of South Beach. . . needless to say we spent a lot of time there.
The rest of my stay was an eclectic mix of lounging by the pool, or on my beautiful balcony over looking miles of sugary beach, snuggling, dining at our favorite locale for comfort food, YardBird Southern Table & Bar, wandering about Lincoln Road doing some window shopping and early morning yoga on the sand. Getting back to basics really gave my mini stay-cation the peaceful island vibes my soul had been craving. There was no agenda, and I avoided thinking about anything that wasn’t right in front of me.
Give yourself permission to relax. I highly recommend peppering your stay with cat naps as a great way to recharge your batteries. Taking full advantage of the lack of distractions I allowed myself time to lounge, meditate and sleep as much as I wanted without feeling as if I was wasting time. Our mind needs tranquility, a time-out from all the distractions in this crazed millennial society. Being alone with your thoughts is one of the best ways to spark your creativity, give you deeper perspective, and revitalize those overused and underused neural connections.
A spontaneous stay-cation can free you of all your daily stress and revitalize you for the next stretch of hard work. Reward yourself, you deserve it!!
